Texas Rangers catcher Yorvit Torrealba received the gift of a 66 game suspension by the Venezuelan League for striking an umpire in the face. After striking out, Torrealba got very agitated and started to yell at the umpire. This would escalate in Torrealba striking the umpire across the face with an open hand. The MLB does not know if the suspension will carry over in any way. Torrealba was an important part in the Rangers' effort last season, hitting .273 with 7 homers.
The Xavier Musketeers Men's Basketball team got the gift of a victory. After a very promising 8-0 start to the season, they had several players suspended in a brawl with bitter rival Cincinnati. After the fight, Xavier dropped three straight games to Oral Roberts, Long Beach State, and Hawaii. Finally, on Christmas Day in the last place game at the Diamond Head Classic, Xavier beat Southern Illinois University 87-77. The Musketeers have one more non-conference game with Gonzaga before they open up Atlantic 10 play at La Salle.
The Detroit Lions have received the gift of a playoff berth. They defeated the San Diego Chargers 38-10, earning their first playoff berth in 11 years. Jim Schwartz is on the receiving end of a long rebuilding project in Detroit. They carry a 10-5 record into their New Years Day game at Green Bay. The Falcons clinched the other NFC wildcard spot, and the NFL playoff picture is almost complete; the Giants play the Cowboys for a playoff spot, and the Denver Broncos have unfinished business to attend.
I hope the new year brings as much excitement as this past year has delivered. 'Til next time.
